:: Call for Curators :: Guest Curator Project 2012-2013
Action Art Actuel [AAA] is putting out a call to exhibition curators. For a fourth consecutive year, AAA is making its spaces available to a curator for a series of exhibitions, enabling him/her to play a crucial role in determining AAA’s 2012-2013 programming.
The curator will have the mandate to present a series of four exhibitions on a theme of his/her choice. The proposed program may include 1 or 2 residency projects for a 6 to 8 week period of research and production. In the selection process, the jury will favour projects that would include performances or off-site interventions during and/or at the opening of exhibitions.
Mathieu Beauséjour, Eric Mattson and Stéphane Bertrand have participated in the guest curator project in previous years and approached the project from a unique perspective. Sound art, considering time as a crucial component of art, architecture and public intervention, each programming year had its distinctive theme. We encourage applicants to go to the gallery’s website to consult the written and visual material for these exhibitions, in order to propose new avenues and themes for 2012-2013.
AAA started this curatorial initiative for the real and virtual movement it can generate. Be it through actual travel or a vaster proliferation of ideas, we hope to support exchanges between various artistic and cultural milieus. Independent curators build bridges that allow the organisation to expand its relevance and to welcome a new voice to the community.
Because of the changing nature of art, curators can play an important role in imagining new concrete or theoretical structures inside of which artistic practices are exhibited. As well as supporting contemporary artistic practices, AAA also supports innovation and research in the curatorial field by continuing its Guest Curator Project for its yearly programming.
THE CURATOR’S MANDATE
- - To propose a theme for a series of four exhibitions;
- - To conceive of four exhibitions based on this theme;
- - To select the artists and the artworks;
- - To provide the necessary documentation for evaluating the proposed projects;
- - To establish the first contact with the artists in order to be assured of their collaboration (following the acceptance of a proposal, the centre will assume responsibility for the subsequent stages);
- - To write a text presenting the series [500 words max.] and a critical essay on the overall programming [1000 words approx.], and to provide the AAA staff with information for writing the grant applications and press releases;
- - To be present at the opening of the season and for each exhibition [as much as possible], be available for media interviews.
An honorarium will be paid to the curator. For more details consult our Web site [honoraria paid, list of equipment, plans of exhibition and work spaces].
The curator must agree to visit the centre before beginning the programming work in order to become acquainted with the spaces.
The curator is responsible for selecting the projects; however, they are subject to the centre’s approval for financial, technical and/or logistical reasons.

AAA offers a stimulating environment for research, experimentation and presentation in which both emerging and established artists can participate in a program of exhibitions, events and residencies. The centre has two exhibition galleries, a studio with residence and a documentation centre of contemporary art.
AAA is a very dynamic artist-run centre, sustained by a smoothly run directive that proposes various means of presentation, research, promotion and production of multidisciplinary works. Several initiatives and satellite activities are carried out in parallel with the exhibition program, such as publications, organized training sessions and public outreach programs. Numerous collaborations are also initiated through curated projects and international exchanges.
