Founded in 1987, Action Art Actuel [AAA] is an artist-run centre, located in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, in Montérégie. Its mandate: presenting and promoting contemporary art. The means : organizing exhibitions, editing publications, producing public art events, animating conferences and roundtable discussions.
Polidisciplinary, the centre is particularly interested in supporting hybrid practices as defined by the chosen medium as much as by the questions raised and reflections brought around. The centre privileges artistic projects which unfold within the framework of contemporary art issues and artistic practices; the actuality of chosen themes reflecting temporality in a global context and their milieu. Wishing to encourage dialogue, we favour collaboration, communication and circulation of ideas through satellites activities implicating artists from Quebec and from international artistic communities. Activities take the shape of off-site events and special projects, collaborations with other cultural organizations, projects around curating and publications The centre is also involved regionally, making it a lively and familiar space.
Introduced in 2005, an artist-in-residence program enables artists to engage in research and creation residency positions of variable lenghts. Adjacent to the gallery, this space comprises a living space as well as a studio space.
Furthermore, Action Art Actuel follows an educative mission through the animation of workshops offered to school groups and the implementation of outreach training sessions for the general public.
