The Residency Program

Action Art Actuel, a multidisciplinary artist-run centre, supports hybrid practices defined by the artist's chosen media as well as by the questions and reflections they challenge us with. The centre privileges projects dealing with contemporary art issues and artistic practices, linked to their time and society.

For its 2008-2009 program, Action Art Actuel welcomes your proposals on the theme of UTOPIA.

Initially, the notion of Utopia endeavoured to enlarge on what is possible. Over time in our society, it paradoxically has become a synonym of the impossible. Yesterday’s progressive and optimistic utopias have become obsolete and have fallen into oblivion. However, we believe that utopia relates to the artist’s commitment, to the way s/he deals with the world; whether society must be idealize to carry out this commitment or whether it takes place in the reality of everyday life.

AAA invites you to experiment with Utopia or its paradox, dystopia, through multidisciplinary proposals. Stories of semantics or lifestyle trends, what are the utopias —past, present or future— left to explore?

• $ 1,500 (CAN) residency fee;
• 4 to 6-weeks residency followed by a 4-weeks exhibition;
• Accommodation for the duration of the residency;
• Access to the centre’s equipment;

Selection committee will met in January and responses will be mailed in Feburary2008.

Submissions should include:
1. Project description (including technical requirements if any);
2. Updated résumé;
3. Artist statement;
4. 15 to 20 digital images of recent work on CD and/or video document (NTSC) on DVD, with a detailed description including title, date, dimensions and media;
5. Press clippings, reviews, catalogue, publications, leaflets;
6. A self-addressed stamped envelope for your submission to be returned (otherwise it will not be).
